Dr. Tanya Kennedy

Dr. Tanya Kennedy, a National Board Certified Reading and Language Specialist, has dedicated over 25 years to education. As an Instructional Advisor for the English as a Second Language Department for Memphis-Shelby County Schools, she brings her expertise to the forefront. Her recent achievement, a Doctor of Education in Instructional Leadership from Union University, is a testament to her commitment.

As Secretary for the National Board Network for Accomplished Minoritized Educators, she focuses on providing targeted professional learning on culturally responsive teaching practices for specialized populations. Additionally, as a Tennessee Education Association National Board Certified Teacher Cadre member, she offers valuable training and support to teachers pursuing National Board Certification. Originally from New Orleans, LA, she received her Bachelor's in Elementary Education and Master's in Curriculum and Instruction, specializing in Reading and English as a Second Language, from The University of New Orleans. Dr. Kennedy relocated to Memphis, TN, in 2007, where she found her love for teaching English as a Second Language.

She was also awarded the 2020 West Tennessee TESOL Teacher of the Year, and her passion for teaching was featured in Chalkbeat TN as part of their "How I Teach" series. Dr. Kennedy's advocacy work is a significant part of her career. As a state teacher fellow for the Hope Street Group, she championed the inclusion of teacher voices with educational policymakers. As a Facilitator for Teach Plus Memphis, she provided teacher-led professional development to Shelby County School teachers.

Her passion and advocacy led her to become an ambassador for the Teaching Lab’s Teacher Advisory Board, emphasizing the importance of providing authentic, relevant feedback on upcoming initiatives for the usability and sustainability of these products for classroom implementation. Dr. Kennedy believes that children of color deserve access to high-quality education and promotes this belief through professional learning at the local, state, and national levels.
