Teacher Advisory Board Member

John Seelke

John Seelke currently serves as the Instructional Specialist for Secondary Mathematics at Montgomery County Public Schools, a position underscored by a rich tapestry of experiences in the field of mathematics education. His journey into the world of teaching began with a decade dedicated to instructing middle and high school students in math, splitting his tenure between private institutions and McKinley Technology High School in the DC Public Schools system. This foundation laid the groundwork for a broader engagement with education, leading him to higher education roles and significant responsibilities within the central offices of two school districts.

Seelke's academic pursuits culminated in earning a PhD in Education Policy and Leadership from the University of Maryland, College Park, an achievement that not only reflects his dedication to education but also his commitment to leadership within the field. His role extends beyond that of an Instructional Specialist; he has also contributed as a Manager for Secondary Mathematics in the DC Public Schools and currently presides over the Maryland Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM), demonstrating a commitment to advancing the discipline of mathematics education at multiple levels.

At the core of Seelke's teaching philosophy is the belief that teaching transcends the mere transmission of knowledge. He views his role as akin to that of a conductor, orchestrating a classroom environment where students are engaged and empowered to interact with the material in meaningful ways. This philosophy balances a deep understanding of mathematical content with a genuine interest in the lives and experiences of each student, fostering a learning environment that is as dynamic as it is insightful.

Recognition of Seelke's dedication and innovative approach to teaching mathematics came in 2007 when he was honored with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching (PAEMST) for his work at McKinley Technology High School. This accolade is a testament to his exceptional skill as an educator and his ability to inspire excellence in the field of mathematics.

Seelke's involvement with the Teacher Advisory Board (TAB) stems from a desire to contribute his expertise to initiatives that prioritize meaningful, equity-focused educational materials. His appreciation for the Teaching Lab's commitment to incorporating the voices of educators in their work reflects his broader vision for education—a vision deeply influenced by a mentor teacher during his master's education. This mentor emphasized the importance of recognizing the diverse ways students interact with and understand mathematics, a principle that has guided Seelke in his efforts to create inclusive and responsive learning opportunities. In Seelke's view, the classroom is a place of mutual learning, where the voices of students are just as vital as those of their teachers, shaping an educational experience that is rich, varied, and deeply human.
