Sandra Prades-Bertran

Sandra Prades-Bertran is currently an Early Literacy and Dual Language Coach for Oakland USD. She has been in education for 17 years teaching grades TK-2nd. Sandra knew she wanted to become a teacher from early years that is why she enrolled in Blanquerna, Ramon Llull college to study English as a Second Language Elementary Teaching.

She started her teaching journey back in Barcelona, Spain (where she is originally from) as a TK and Kindergarten ELA teacher at an International School. She balanced first year teaching with English as a Second Language for PreK Master. Those 8 years of teaching foundational skills in several languages sparked a passion for literacy and understanding how multilingual learners develop their foundational skills in several languages at the same time.

Back in Spain, she led her school to move into a Phonics program to teach English foundational skills in 2010. In 2015 she moved to Oakland, California, to teach Kinder and 1st grade ELA and SLA at a Dual Language school. 3 years later, she became the early literacy coach at her site where she was able to continue to learn about the Science of Reading and understanding how humans learn how to read and the impact in instructional decisions. In 2020 she moved to a district position where she continues this work at 18 schools.

Since then, she has been a strong advocate for structured literacy for all kids and is a true believer that all students can learn how to read when being taught all the components of a strong literacy block with an oral language development foundation. She joined the Teacher Advisory Board (TAB) because she sees the alignment in core values and is determined to continue to expand her learning and impact in education by collaborating with other educators world-wide to advocate for best practices that will ensure all students will become strong readers.
