The Power of a Black Teacher! Featuring Steven McKinney

Written by Teaching Lab

Steven McKinney is a dedicated, driven educator and coach, with over 21 years of experience in education, and is our latest subject and first man for The Power of a Black Teacher! where we sit down with Black teachers nationwide, to understand their experience of being a Black teacher in America.

The Mississippi born teacher began his journey as a technology advisor for the government, before transitioning over to teaching mathematics. He is very passionate about integrating technology and education in the classroom.

Besides being a state and nationally recognized educator, Steven also coaches a variety of sports (basketball, volleyball, softball, and track) for Booker T. Washington high school in Memphis.

One of his career highlights was having a shout-out from former President Barack Obama, as he gave his speech at the high school for the Race to the Top Commencement Challenge.

When asked, what it is like to be a student in Mr. McKinney’s classroom, his description was:

“…students will be fully engaged with a lot of technology integration… I love to keep my kids engaged with current events and to teach through the use of technology.”
