The Power of a Black Teacher! Featuring Crystal M. Watson

Written by Roel Concepcion

Crystal M. Watson is a middle school math teacher and instructional coach from the Cincinnati Public Schools, and she’s the latest subject to be interviewed for The Power of a Black Teacher! where we sit down with Black teachers across the nation and talk to them about what it means to be a Black teacher in America.

Crystal has a Masters of Education in Educational Leadership and Administration at Teachers College at Columbia University and has centered her work on providing a space for student voices and identity development.

On her Twitter profile, she labels herself as a:

“Audacious dreamer. Dope human. Disruptor. Student voice, choice, and identity advocate.”

And accompanying this profile bio is an image of rapper, artist and musician, J. Cole, featuring his lyric: “Anything’s possible, you gotta dream like you never seen obstacles.” We point all of it out because it perfectly encapsulates Crystal in the classroom, where she continuously encourages all of her students to dream and makes her the perfect subject for this powerful video series.
